As an artist and designer
My name is Leah Princess Dwyer and I am an artist/ designer/ teacher. Growing up in an isolated area (such as the Dublin countryside) encouraged me to be creative and use the environment around me to make art to keep myself entertained as a child. My connection to nature and memory has been a running theme throughout my work in my life.
I have always enjoyed observing and analysing the world around me through drawing- whether it was the people, their conversations or the places or things that catch my eye.
Teaching practice
I have been fortunate to experience teaching in a variety of different settings such as Post- Primary Schools, Primary Schools. Youth Centers and dance classes. I grew up helping my mother teach ballet and jazz dance in primary schools. When I became of age I began teaching and planning my own lessons in Ronanstown Youth Service. I developed a love of teaching, collaborating and interacting with the youth which led to my decision to become a Post-Primary school teacher through the National College of Art and Design.
Due to my background in dance, performance and art I always strive to encourage and develop my students appreciation and knowledge of art- current art to historical, the creative industries and the value it holds in society. I want to educate and also listen to the students voice and ideas which relies on an inclusive, supportive and caring environment in the classroom.
I have experienced teaching post-primary in a co-educational, multi-denominational Educate Together/ Community School, a Community College and a co-educational primary school. Some schools Ipad centered and others using traditional books. I believe that by having a range of experience in various type of educational settings has developed my teaching skills and has given me the opportunity to learn about many students diverse backgrounds which, in turn, helps build lessons that meet students needs and interests.
